As a two mum family, baby record books are one of the hardest things out there in terms of “stuff”. We looked at many books on the high street before Eden was born and drew a blank as I didn’t want to spend the whole time crossing out “daddy” and writing in “Mama”.
We were offered the chance to review a baby record book from Little Pickle Crafting and I was intrigued. Could someone have finally developed a product that fits all families? We’d found a couple of options online, but normally they had to be shipped from America or were extortionately expensive, so we’d never given them much of a second thought.
Little Pickle Crafting describe the book as:
The perfect gift for same sex, gay, lesbian, adoptive, step and foster parents
– Instead of referring to parents as ‘mum’ and ‘dad’, this book refers to you as simply ‘parent’, with your own space to add “what you know me as”
– ideal for any type of family!
When the book arrived, I was impressed. I like that it isn’t bulky and I loved that the colour palette would suit any gender of child. I liked the quality of the hardback cover and the pages and the fact that at 216mm x 216mm, it doesn’t take up a whole lot of space. It feels like an excellent quality product, and the care that has gone into the design is quite something.
I got to work filling it in. Although Eden is two in December, we still haven’t really filled in a baby book. I rely mostly on the blog and my monthly updates on here to tell me what Eden was doing at each monthly milestone. I liked that the book isn’t too in depth. Filling it in doesn’t feel like a mission, yet there is space for everything that you want to say. I also like that it has plenty of space to add pictures and other little scraps of memories. I can see it shaping up to be a really special record of Eden’s first year.
Of course, the piece de resistance for me is that this book actually does cater for most types of family. It says goodbye to “mummy” and “daddy” and instead uses “parent”, which means that anyone dear to the child can put their details in that spot and absolutely own it. No one has to cross anything out in order to create a new heading for themselves. No one has to become the one whose details are always under a patch of scribbling. That’s important as it helps make the child’s story nice and clear. It’s not a case of “everyone else has a daddy, but you have two mummies”, it’s rather a case of “these are your parents. This is your family. Hooray!”
The books retail at £15 + £3 P&P and orders can be placed through the Little Pickle Crafting Facebook Page or through their Etsy Shop. I think it would be a great gift for any kind of family, but most of all I adore that it recognises that not all families are “mum+dad+baby=family”.
DISCLAIMER : I was gifted a baby record book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions remain my own.

Just wanted to thank you again for this review—I ended up ordering one (for my second kid, who’s due next month) and it’s lovely. Many thanks to Little Pickle Crafting for arranging US shipping! The cost was very reasonable. My spouse is in the middle of a gender transition, so we really appreciate a book that isn’t fixed on “Mommy” and “Daddy.”
That’s amazing! Glad you’re enjoying it xx
