This video has pretty much gone viral at the moment. A criticism of being online, it calls folks who use social media “drones” and implies that none of us ever look up from our phones and computers. Children don’t play out any more and everyone is stuck to their iPhone screen.
I have a response to this, and it thought I would share it here. As much as I hate to see a child glued to an ipad in a restaurant, and I hate seeing couples starting at their iPhones instead of talking to each other, I think social media has a VERY important place in our society.
Once upon a time, on a site called MySpace, two girls met. They talked. They shared a love of musical theatre. Sometimes they spent hours just talking crap to each other. Eventually they arranged to see West End show We Will Rock You on the same day. One of hunim brought their big sister with them. They all because firm friends.one of them lived in London, the other in Doncaster. When the one who lived in Doncaster wanted to move to London, the big sister moved out with her. Oh yeah, then they became a couple. Now they write a blog about trying for a baby with a known donor.
Without the Internet, Amy and I would have never met. There’s a hell of a lot of things that wouldn’t have taken place without the Internet. I probably wouldn’t have been to New York several times, I wouldn’t have met some of my favourite West End actors and interviewed them for another blog. I wouldn’t have spent a year seeing shows for free due to that blog. We found an advert online for Misty, so we wouldn’t have Misty. Oh yeah… And we found our house online too. And our donor. If it weren’t for the Internet, we would probably be laying a ridiculous amount of money at some clinic somewhere. Most importantly, I wouldn’t have the person that has made the world of difference to my life and made me the luckiest girl there is – my wife.
I just think there is a healthy balance. No, we don’t have to be glued to technology all the time. Yes, people should speak to each other. BUT there is a place in the world for social media. I have friends all over the world. Some of them I have never met and they know me better than some of my actual friends. In this trying to conceive journey could I really talk to real life friends about this stuff? Do they REALLY want to know about cervical mucus?
So, in conclusion. Looking up is great, but life wouldn’t be the same without the Internet.
